Federal Employee Program 2024 Updates

Starting January 1, 2024, members of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) Federal Employee Program (FEP) Standard Option, Basic Option, and FEP Blue Focus plans will no longer require prior authorization or medical necessity review for the following services:

  • Intensity-modulated radiation therapy
  • Surgical treatment of a congenital anomaly
  • Proton beam therapy in individuals 21 years of age or younger, or when care is related to the treatment of:
    • Neoplasms of the nervous system including the brain and spinal cord
    • Malignant neoplasms of the thymus
    • Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphomas
  • Stereotactic radiosurgery related to the treatment of malignant neoplasms of the brain and of the eye specific to the:
    • Choroid and ciliary body
    • Benign neoplasms of the cranial nerves, pituitary glands, aortic body, or paraganglia
    • Neoplasms of the craniopharyngeal duct and glomus jugular tumors
    • Trigeminal neuralgias, temporal sclerosis, certain epilepsy conditions, or arteriovenous malformations
