Premera Social Impact Introduces New Series Focused on Community
Tyler, AJ, and their six children moved to Spokane to be closer to relatives. But finding an affordable place for their large family to live was difficult. Facing homelessness, they turned to Family Promise of Spokane (FPS). With help from an FPS case manager, Tyler found a construction job and the family relocated to transitional housing within two weeks. The family has had a stable home for the last two years and now they’re working on a plan for longer-term housing. It’s all thanks to Family Promise of Spokane.
Premera Social Impact is a proud supporter of FPS. It’s one of several non-profits Premera partners with that provide vital support and resources to underserved populations. Today and throughout the year, we’re sharing stories about our partners and the people they serve through a new series here on Provider News.
Since 2017, Premera’s Social Impact team has invested more than $100 million in community organizations in Washington and Alaska. This translates to a significant and tangible impact on the lives of thousands of individuals. The support focuses on four key areas:
- Behavioral health
- Homelessness
- Rural health
- Health equity
Throughout this year, we’ll introduce you to individuals whose lives have been transformed and the non-profit organizations that made it possible. Together, let’s celebrate the power of community and the incredible potential we have to make a difference in the lives of those who need it most.
When Lux Howard (pictured above) came out to his mother seven years ago, she laughed in his face. He was only 14 and didn’t have the life skills or language to communicate what he was going through.
Today, Lux brings his experiences to his job as an outreach youth counselor at Cocoon House in Everett. Cocoon House has a drop-in center for homeless or displaced youth.
In this role, Lux meets young people on their terms, whatever those terms may be. “I want them to understand that this is a safe place to be,” Lux said, “and I want to be able to help them pull out of their struggle.”
Please note: Premera Social Impact is not currently accepting unsolicited grant or sponsorship requests.
